/ Grußwort zum 15. Festival der Union des Théâtres de l’europe

Frankfurt am Main ist sicher die Stadt der Europäischen Zentralbank, aber sie ist mehr als das: die internationalste Stadt Deutschlands, in der europäische Kultur, europäische Geistesgeschichte, europäische Institutionen seit Jahrzehnten eine Selbstverständlichkeit sind. Das gilt gerade auch für die großen Kultureinrichtungen: ob es die Museen sind, das Literaturhaus, die Alte Oper – und natürlich das Theater. Das schauspielfrankfurt als Gastgeberin des Festivals wird in der Zeit zwischen dem 21. April und dem 7. Mai den Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit für die gesamte Rhein-Main- Region, die ja ebenfalls international ausgerichtet ist, bilden. Kultur heißt immer auch die Verbindung des Verschiedenen, die Konfrontation von Gegensätzen, die Herstellung symbolischer Brücken. Kultur heißt Entwicklung, unterwegs sein – ohne genaues Ziel. Der große Anthropologe Arnold Toynbee hat Zivilisation (im Sinne von Kultur) als Bewegung beschrieben, sie sei nicht Zustand, sondern »Reise, nicht Hafen«.
Unterschiedliche Kulturverständnisse zeigen sich durchaus auch auf europäischen Bühnen. Immer wieder hat das schauspielfrankfurt diese Vielfalt aufgenommen und damit ein internationales Profil entwickelt. Ein herausragendes Thema dieses Festivals ist wahrlich von globaler Bedeutung: die Liebe. Ein Thema, dem sich das europäische Theater seit Urzeiten zugewandt hat. In immer neuen Annäherungen, über alle historischen Wandlungen hinweg, mit oft unerwarteten ästhetischen Mitteln: so wird es auch bei diesem 15. Festival im schauspielfrankfurt sein. Ich wünsche allen Beteiligten viel Erfolg und dem Publikum anregende, nachwirkende Aufführungen. Viel Glück!

/ Welcoming the 15th Festival of Union des Théâtres de l ’europe

Frankfurt /Main is not only home to the European Central Bank, but far more besides: It is Germany’s most international city, and here European culture, European intellectual history and European institutions have for decades been part of everyday life. This is especially true of the major cultural institutions, be it the museums, Literaturhaus, Alte Oper – or, of course, the theater. schauspielfrankfurt is hosting the festival and in the period April 21 – May 7 will be the focus of attention in the entire Rhine-Main region, which likewise has a strong international thrust. After all, culture always means the interconnection of disparate items, the confrontation of opposites, the creation of symbolic bridges. Culture means development, means having departed for new shores without knowing where they are exactly. The famous anthropologist Arnold Toynbee described civilization (in the sense of culture) as movement, not as a state, but rather “travel without a haven”.
Europe’s theaters attest to the different understandings of culture. schauspielfrankfurt has repeatedly taken up this diversity and in so doing developed an international profile of its own. One outstanding theme of the Festival: the truly global importance of love. It is a theme which European theater has addressed since time immemorial. Tackling it repeatedly from new angles, down through different historical periods, and often with unexpected aesthetic means. And I am sure this will also be the case at the 15th Festival at schauspielfrankfurt.
